Two bridges will change transports in Kenya Coast

Work to be completed before elections, in may 2022

Only six more months for the road and transport system on the coast to change for the better.
The government has announced that it is its intention to complete absolutely by the beginning of the final phase of the electoral campaign, that is the month of May 2022, the infrastructure works already launched a few years ago from Lamu to Lunga Lunga, on the border with Tanzania.
In particular, the two major projects that could represent a turning point for the road network and the traffic that from Mombasa, the country's most important port and second international airport for arrivals and departures, will head towards Diani and Malindi.
There are two bridges: the first, the Mwache bridge, will connect the island of Mombasa to the mainland beyond the airport, creating in fact an outer ring road that will connect anyone, whether arriving from the Nairobi-Mombasa highway or from the international airport, whose destination is Diani, the south coast or Tanzania.
Until now, as is well known, Mombasa is connected to the south coast, Kwale county and the Tanzanian border, only by ferries that transport people and vehicles, including trucks and heavy vehicles, but also tourists, in the Likoni channel. Years of unavoidable queues, inefficiencies and accidents have limited transit and made transportation problematic. The recently inaugurated pedestrian bridge has certainly not improved things. Now, while waiting for a Japanese mega-project for a high bridge in the same area where the ferries dock, the passage over the Mwache lagoon, which will create the longest viaduct over the water in the country, will in any case decongest Likoni from trucks and tourist transfers, but also connect the rest of the coast to Diani and the border, skipping the chaos of Kenya's second city altogether.
Work in Mwache, according to the Ministry of Transport, is already at 60%. The ring road that will connect it to Mombasa, via Dongo Kundu, will be about 15 km long.
The other major project that should decongest Mombasa on the way out to Malindi, and particularly the Nyali and Bamburi areas, is the second Nyali bridge that will connect the island city from the north. If indeed both bridges will be inaugurated in May 2022 as announced by the Minister of Transport James Macharia, really it will be possible to cover distances faster and safer and this will also affect tourism, for example with transfers from the airport also to Watamu and Malindi.
In addition to the bridges, there are other roads to be completed, in Taita Taveta counties, as well as the total widening of Lunga Lunga - Malindi, in view of the future construction of the dual carriageway highway.
"The government is committed to ensuring that all roads are completed by next year," Macharia said, "we want every part of this coast to benefit from development and its residents to benefit from government projects," he said.
