Watch out for new scam on Safaricom numbers

Block whatsapp and clean up mpesa: here's how

16-11-2022 by redazione

Warning. A new cell phone scam is gaining momentum in Kenya for those who use Safaricom operator that can clone your whatsapp account and make it unusable for at least 7 days and, if well orchestrated, enter the "Mpesa" money transfer service.
This is a fraud that, in addition to trying to clean out money that is on your phone, takes as much data as possible as you stay on the phone.

The scam is certainly orchestrated by people who have access to the terminals of Kenya's most popular mobile phone company. This is the unfolding of the fraudulent call, detected through multiple testimonies in recent days.

The fake Safaricom operator calls from a number starting with 020, which is the area code for Nairobi.
He tells you that he is calling from Safaricom and asks if you answer to the sim card owner's name.
So if you are the owner, it will say your name and is likely to have some of your other data as well. This will make you think that it is indeed an employee of the mobile phone company whose number you have.
At this point comes the reason for the phone call. The scammer tells you that your phone number may be disconnected because it appears to belong to another person.
Recently mobile phone companies have had to require their customers to re-register phone numbers, with new verification of identity documents, due to a government decree as part of national security.
So the response comes naturally "I am in compliance, I have done the re-registration."
But the fake operator explains that there must be another problem, and to prove that it is true and if he does not answer certain questions he will disconnect your line, he sends a text message while you are on the phone and asks you to verify it. Text message that comes with the words SAFARICOM and not from a normal number.
So it comes natural to think that the person you are dialoguing with is actually working for you.

At this point the scammer will ask you some questions about the last phone calls received and the last Mpesa transactions made. He tries to stall you in order to steal as much data as possible and at the same time he wants to see if you are falling for it so much as to go so far as to send him your Mpesa pin code and Whatsapp pin code.
Mind you that if the Mpesa PIN is not given (and in any case Safaricom confirms that the PIN has nothing to do with identifying a number and its rightful owner) however the scammer may have cloned the SIM CARD and therefore as soon as the call is over it is advisable to change it immediately, as well as all other codes and passwords in the phone and associated with the number.

The case of Whatsapp is different, because during the phone call you may get a message directly from the instant messaging and free calling service, telling you that another phone number has entered your chats and address book. By now it is too late, they have cloned you at the very least whatsapp but if you have been on the phone enough also the sim card. At this point to verify, it is still worth going to a safaricom center, because often the company's phone customer service is not accurate and sometimes unreliable.

At this point, after changing Mpesa's pin and those of all services that can be traced back to your number, you have to send a message to Safaricom's 333 number with the phone number they called you from. An automated response comes back asking if you lost money, asking you to re-enter your phone number, asking if you went to the police to report it, and if you have anything else to say.

AND REMEMBER: SAFARICOM CALLS ONLY FROM THE NUMBER 0722000000
