Beware of new phone scam in Kenya

Tries to target TV users with decoders

29-03-2023 by redazione

After telephone scams against Kenyans and foreigners by fake operators of the Safaricom company, who have also swindled many Italians out of thousands of shillings through the Mpesa payment platform, if not also managing to penetrate the bank accounts of the unfortunate (and somewhat naïve) victims, a new scam attempt is trying to target residents who have subscribed with the South African DSTV satellite channels operated in Kenya by the Multichoice platform. Through the decoder and a satellite dish, the DSTV subscription is essential to also watch the Italian channel Raitalia, as well as to watch live soccer matches from Serie A, European cups and the national team.
The method is more or less similar to that used by the alleged Safaricom employees.
You receive a phone call from a Kenyan mobile number, with the operator qualifying with your name, saying that he is calling you from DSTV and showing that he knows your name. He then informs you that your last monthly fee payment has not been regularly paid to the company. From here starts the request to repay the monthly, or simply provide them with an mpesa code that will come to you by phone so that you can unblock the last payment. From there, as the scammers in the name of Safaricom already did, the new online crooks will change your mpesa code and clean out your account.
Therefore, be very careful. Usually DSTV calls you only from the support number, 0711066000. If you have any concerns, you can also ask them to contact you by e-mail, not by phone, and any e-mail should come from mchoice@ke.multichoice.com
