Weather conditions improve in Kenya

The situation on the coast, between damage and repairs

27-11-2023 by redazione

The Kenya Meteorological Service has given good hopes for a gradual end to the period of bad weather across the country, starting with the coastal region which has suffered the most in the past week.
From Wednesday, the rains should (conditional) thin out and especially lose intensity, and the sun, which is the great drier especially at the equator, should peep out more and more.

Meanwhile, the Kilifi county government has also thrown a cement shower of optimism, repairing in record time the Mbogolo bridge that had collapsed on the road from Vipingo to Kilifi, along the so-called Mombasa-Malindi highway. That road is the only junction beyond Mombasa, because otherwise to reach Kilifi and the northern destinations, including Watamu and precisely Malindi, one has to head towards Nairobi and after about twenty kilometres turn Mazeras towards Kaloleni.

Flooding is also receding at Mtondia, between Kilifi and Watamu, where part of the road was overgrown by water, creating a lake impassable for low and off-road vehicles.
On the other hand, the situation regarding the banks of the Galana-Sabaki river is still critical. Due in part to the opening of dams in the north of the country, the river is always on the verge of overflowing, putting thousands of families, homes and cultivable fields at risk, for poor people who live particularly from farming and livestock breeding.

The emergency in the Lake Victoria region continues, but with the improvement in weather conditions and the tail end of the El Niño cyclone, everything should be over by the first week of December, when the damage will have to be counted and remedied. In many other places in recent days, for example in several places on the Thika-Garissa, the road situation was compromised.
