Sudan, the last male Northern White Rhino, has died.
He was permanently sedated to relieve his pain in the Ol' Pejeta reserve, where he had been living for some time, despite being owned by a zoo in the Czech Republic.
The animal was 45 years old and for some time his health conditions had not allowed for any hope.
During his lifetime he had only had two female daughters, who are still protected in the same reserve.
The ‘White Northern Rhinoceros’ (also known as the ‘square-lipped rhinoceros’) is one of the two subspecies of white rhinoceros (the other is the southern one, found below the equatorial belt).
Unfortunately, as confirmed by the managers of the reserve and the Prague zoo, we are witnessing its extinction.
The only chance of avoiding this seems to lie in genetics and its progress.
Recently pseudo-seminal elements have been collected from Sudan and later on in vitro insemination will be attempted with the eggs of the daughters.
Even if nothing will be natural, and for the few remaining rhinos their destiny unfortunately seems sealed.
