From Kenya comes one more hope for not seeing the northern white rhino, a species that has no males left in the world and has two females in Ol Pejeta Reserve, north of Nairobi, become extinct. Thanks to one of them, Fatu, five new embryos were created from the frozen semen of the last male, Sudan, who disappeared five years ago.
Fatu is one of two females that had been transported to Kenya from a zoo in the Czech Republic in 2009 to mate with Sudan, who, however, being already old after a few mating attempts had failed to successfully fertilize them.
Now finally the Biorescue project, funded by the German government, has announced on its Facebook page that it has succeeded in the IVF operation.
"Four years after the start of this ambitious project to save the northern white rhino from extinction, the team has made significant progress toward its ultimate goal," Biorescue announced.
With these five, there are a total of 29 "frozen" embryos waiting to give birth to new specimens. In the past, attempts to insert embryos into white rhinos have failed.
