PARKS AND RESERVES

The 10 golden rules to respect in Kenya's parks

The KWS guide to a respectful safari

15-03-2025 by Kenya Wildlife Service

The Kenya Wildlife Service reminds us of the ten golden rules for a safari that respects nature and its guests in the wild in Kenya's parks and reserves.

A decalogue to be followed at all costs, also to avoid incurring violations and consequent sanctions.

  1. Remember that you are in the home of wild animals, respect their privacy and right of way on the tracks.
  2. Stick to the park entry and exit times. Unless you are a visitor who sleeps inside, you must leave before sunset. The gates open at 6 a.m. and close at 6 p.m.
  3. Follow the same road rules that apply outside: car raids and driving under the influence of alcohol are strictly prohibited.
  4. Move slowly and make as little noise as possible, remember that all the animals are wild and can react violently if provoked.
  5. Feeding the animals is strictly forbidden, as it can affect their diet and change their habits, making them dependent on humans.
  6. Noises and sounds can distract the animals from their daily routine, so please use mobile phones and any other devices only in designated areas.
  7. Vehicles of all kinds can only be driven on and along the roads and tracks. Off-road driving is strictly forbidden and will be penalised.
  8. Observe the speed limit, which is 40 kilometres per hour inside the parks.
  9. For no reason whatsoever, do not leave the car, except in areas where it is permitted. Remember to always keep the doors closed.
  10. Observe and photograph wild animals from a distance of at least twenty metres.
