The art of storytelling, acting, absorbing culture and then sharing it with an audience from the stage of a theatre. It is one of the most noble pursuits, offering Kenyans the chance to redeem their lives, give them hope and provide them with an additional creative and professional outlet.
This is what Wakio Mzenge, one of Kenya's most talented and well-known actresses and theatre directors, had in mind.
Many have seen her or heard of her through her frequent collaborations with the Italian Cultural Institute in Nairobi and her performances alongside Freddie del Curatolo.
For the second summer in a row, Wakio is giving 20 aspiring actors and storytellers from economically disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to learn the secrets of the trade, as well as the knowledge and skills that govern the world of acting.
Called the “Pokeza Skill programme”, it is a 12-week course offering a total of 40 hours of professional acting training, giving 21 Kenyans who would not otherwise be able to afford it the chance to experience the world of creativity and put themselves to the test, mastering stage presence, voice control and character development in order to express themselves and cultivate a passion that could become a profession. Not only that, but last year's graduates have embraced their role as knowledge bearers, mentoring their peers in their communities and passing on the baton to perpetuate the programme's mission of sustainable growth and skills transfer in the arts.
The first edition was a great success and some of the participants have already started their careers in the world of acting.
Wakio herself, buoyed by the response to the first edition last year, explains what it is all about and how we can help this commendable project.
"The programme focused on transforming their professionalism, providing them with targeted knowledge to navigate the theatre industry with artistic excellence and business acumen in the creative economy. Participants not only improved their acting skills, but also embraced creative entrepreneurship, developed a strong sense of identity and self-esteem, and became ambassadors of knowledge who share the skills they have acquired with their colleagues. The Pokeza Skill Programme aims to create a foundation for the sustainability of these artists, while raising their professional standards as creative professionals with a strong business sense."
To continue this initiative week after week, Wakio and her staff, who work on a voluntary basis, need the help of institutions and individuals, enthusiasts and those who practise active and concrete solidarity.
The Kenya Cultural Centre - National Theatre has provided the space, while other associations and forums have facilitated the programme.
Wakio and her BTM Storytellers group need sponsors and funds to continue organising the courses in the best possible way. However, anyone can help in their own small way, for example by donating meals for the students (400 shillings x 21 plus 5 for teachers and staff per week). In short, with around 10,000 shillings, you can provide concrete help to this programme, which started this week and hopes to complete its mission.
