There are dozens of initiatives, ranging from the classic to the more creative and imaginative, to celebrate World Tourism Day in Kenya today, 29 September.
Initiatives, it is worth saying, aimed mainly at Kenyan citizens, also because the low tourist season does not record high visitor numbers at this time. It is regrettable, however, that no thought was given to the thousands of foreign residents who have contributed over the years to improving the country's holiday sector and who would have gladly participated in some of the initiatives during this period.
Starting with the possibility of visiting all the national parks and reserves managed by the State, through the Kenya Wildlife Service. Today, in fact, entry for the entire day will be free for Kenyan citizens. The same will apply to all museums and historical and archaeological sites in the country.
In Nairobi, it will be possible to participate in the ‘Nairobi race’, the amateur bicycle race that crosses a large part of the capital. Much more unusual and captivating is the competitive race in Mombasa: the first ‘Tuk Tuk Rally’ will be staged, where the famous three-wheeled taxis will do battle on an urban route, for the first time without passengers and with their reckless driving. The whole thing will be surrounded by a big party, with prizes for the best-decorated tuk tuks and a final concert in the Waterfront arena, the public area on the coastal city's marina. This year's designated capital to celebrate tourism will be Kisumu, on Lake Victoria. Here the event will feature peace caravans, environmental conservation, a charity marathon, a football tournament, beach events and cultural festivals. The organisers have also planned a networking gala dinner, exhibitions, youth programmes and award ceremonies for achievements. Similar events in every city and town in the country. In Malindi, as is customary in the township, the Tourism Day was combined with the monthly township and beach clean-up Saturday, organised by PWAM.
