FREDDIE'S CORNER
14-01-2025 by Freddie del Curatolo
The last time I laughed, I was already grown up, already a mother.
But I was not ashamed of it.
Nobody taught us to laugh, when it happens we are all equal, peaceful, friends.
If we were all good, quiet, honest and respectful of others, we could even allow ourselves to be giggly all the time, to be taken for fools, because we wouldn't hurt anyone.
Do you remember the days when all it took was the tumble of a child, the hoarse song of a bird on the branches, the stupid joke of your schoolmate, the loud fart of a cow?
Do you remember the contagious, harassing laughter, the laughter held back so as not to offend someone, the irreverent, boisterous, silly laughter.
The last time I laughed, I was thinking about all the things that made me laugh.
When grandpa did an imitation of the president and was convinced it was good for him, when grandma fell asleep leaning on the stick, stirring the porridge, when the monkeys ran away and threw themselves into the rainwater barrel, chased by bees.
Do you remember how we used to laugh in the rain, splashing water into the pond, wearing Mother's baggy clothes? And the puppet show at the party when we went to town?
Leave time to cry for when you have to, and always find someone around you to have fun with.
Happiness lives in the present, it always lasts too short and you only recognise it when it has passed.
The last time I laughed, it wasn't the last time.
