Italian food on Malindi tuk tuks

The traveling exhibition of italian Embassy in Kenya

18-11-2022 by Freddie del Curatolo

On the occasion of Italian Cuisine Week in the World, which will end on Sunday, November 20, an original traveling exhibition has been set up in Malindi and Watamu, in which author's images of Italian dishes and foods have been posted on one of the public transport vehicles that are symbolic of the Indian Ocean coast (not only of Kenya, but also of Tanzania and Asian countries, from which the fashion started, as a modern transposition of the historic rickshaws). We are talking about the tuk tuk, the three-wheeled cabs, also with an Italian soul, that of Piaggio with its "countless attempts at imitation."
Since last Monday in Malindi, the town has been filled with spaghetti al pomodoro, Sicilian-style cannoli, panzerotti, seafood risotto, ice cream and other specialties of our home-grown gastronomy, which travel the length and breadth of the town, carrying tourists and residents. A truly unique initiative that malindikenya.net has been following in the media day by day, documenting different moments of the days.
What you can't see and what lies behind Leni Frau's images (author of some of the exhibition's author photos, by the way) is the enthusiasm of the tuk tuk drivers in having their vehicle "personalized," the amazement of the Kenyans in seeing the images matched to their "cabs," and the fun in trying to guess the type of food immortalized. A nice spot for our culinary tradition in a place that has always been known as a "Little Italy" on the Kenyan coast.
Below is the roundup of the most significant images from the week in Malindi.
