Variations and waves, what Kenya expect till june

Optimism but attention for more contagious viruses

22-01-2021 by redazione

The Kenyan health authorities have also taken stock of the first ten months of the pandemic in the country, and the data are beginning to comfort (the percentage of cases per swab is fixed at between 3 and 4%, intensive care units are half-empty, only 33 people are currently admitted with supplementary oxygen assistance, and there is no real outbreak). What worries researchers at the Kenya Research Medical Institute (KEMRI) now are the famous 'variants'.
After the discovery that among the new strains of a mutable virus as this Sars 2 has turned out to be, particularly the one found in 2 positive patients detected in Taita Taveta County on the border with Tanzania, it seems to lead back to the South African variant that worries for its contagiousness.
The good news is that the viral load of all the latest cases is still very low, and the other is that according to Kenyan experts, however, the genetic mutation of these new viruses linked to Covid-19 should not have consequences on the effectiveness of vaccines designed on the original strain.
In the meantime, in the last 24 hours, there have been three deaths linked to the Coronavirus throughout the country.
The Ministry of Health, however, warns to be careful, because with the reopening of schools and activities and the higher contagiousness in March, there could be a new peak of cases and an increase of about 25% of deaths. However, the numbers are still expected to be low, with a maximum of 100 deaths between now and next June.
