CHRISTMAS TOUGHTS

My Vinyasa, an immortal child in Malindi

How an Italian ‘father’ describes his Kenyan creature

26-12-2024 by Pino Cipolla

Vinyasa is opposite the Malindi airport. It looks like an aircraft hangar, a furniture warehouse or a country clinic, but it is very nice and clean.
Its aim is to serve others, all the ‘grumpy’ Italians in Malindi, but also the town's orphanage, the big hotels on the coast, the best supermarkets and restaurants.
Vinyasa is made up of good people.
It is a close-knit team, working for fast service and completeness of offer.
They call it the ‘Gourmet Centre’ of the coast. Rare delicacies and specialities, wines of great lineage and First Prize oils (the reason why many go to local supermarkets to buy Italian things is an enigma that not even Turing would have solved).
Some people have music in their blood. Vinyasa has a passion for Italian food, and makes it into music.
And beauty, our Ambassador would say. Of course, gentlemen. Beauty.
But most of all lightness. Bulls, gazelles, panthers, lions: there's a bestiary in giving nicknames to men and things, and for years I've been thinking about what animal to put next to Vinyasa. It is the swallow, but I cannot explain why.
Vinyasa is a builder of goodness without bulldozers. He builds houses with almond paste, uses ladders of panettone, organises concerts of pistachio crunch, musical arrangements with fresh buffalo mozzarella (the best on the market).
Lightness, competence and imagination.
Vinyasa is our immortal child.
