After the Easter hangover, especially on domestic routes but also on Zanzibar, Kigali in Rwanda and Entebbe in Uganda, Kenyan airlines have lowered ticket prices by half, if not more, in view of the drop in travelers in the coming weeks.
If, for example, a ticket for maritime or lake destinations (Kisumu, which for many Kenyans in Nairobi is equivalent to a vacation on the coast) had come to cost up to 15 thousand shillings, this week on the same destinations can be found for less than 7 thousand shillings. Not to mention the coastal destinations, for which 17 thousand shillings were paid, round trip, and from Monday, April 25 will drop to 6800.
The expected price increase due to the shortage and subsequent fuel surcharges does not yet seem to have affected travel fares, also because the domestic flight companies, Jambojet, Skywards, Eastafrican and Safarilink have come out very refreshed from the Easter week.
High demand last week saw Jambojet increase frequencies on some routes to cope with the high number of passengers. It has therefore revised the number of flights to Mombasa, Malindi, Eldoret, Kisumu and Ukunda.
Malindi benefited during the Easter vacations from as many as 27 trips, which fatally decreased from yesterday.
The lack of a bridge on May 1st, which falls on a Sunday, does not allow for optimism regarding the coming weekends, but there is the news of the national holiday recently announced by Interior Minister Fred Matiang'i for Friday, April 29, the day of the state funeral for the third president of the Republic Emilio Mwai Kibaki, who passed away last Friday, April 22. People are already looking forward to Madaraka Day, the national holiday that falls on June 1, this year on a Wednesday. It is difficult, however, to imagine such a long bridge.
