Boat capsized in Watamu, kenyans dead

Tragedy in "blu safari", italian tourist saved

21-01-2023 by redazione

A marine excursion boat carrying about 30 tourists, both Italians and Kenyans, capsized off Garoda beach in Watamu. Sadly, there would be some deaths from drowning, but from the first leaked reports, the Italians would all be safe, treated on shore or transferred to hospitals but not in serious condition, apart from shock.
The boat was searching for dolphins beyond the first reef when it "scuffed" and was reportedly hit by a rogue wave, capsizing and throwing all the occupants, virtually none of whom were wearing life jackets, into the open sea.
Promptly other nearby boats rushed to the scene of the accident, getting the unfortunate people on board, but some Kenyans did not make it. According to reports gathered by malindikenya.net, they were a Kenyan woman and a child, while another minor was reportedly in a very serious condition. The Italians on board reached shore thanks in part to the prompt intervention of Kenya Wildlife Service marine guards. One tourist was resuscitated on the beach and his lungs were emptied of liters of ingested water, others were treated for minor bruises at the Garoda Resort. Six tourists are missing from the roll call so far, but they are almost certainly aboard a second boat that had gone a little beyond the tipping point to follow the dolphins, one of the targets of the "marine safari."
The Honorary Consulate in Malindi, with its staff, immediately followed up on the matter, checking that the compatriots with some problems were admitted to hospitals in Malindi and Watamu and were not in serious condition. From what Malindikenya.net has learned, only one tourist would still be under observation and her condition was said to be stationary.
"We saw the scene from the top of the hotel," says General Manager Guido Bertoni, "in Watamu for as long as I can remember there has never been a similar incident. It was a fatality, a "scuffle" taken at a wave more powerful than the others. We grieve for the local people who lost their lives."
