MOURNING

Farewell to Carlo Barbin, an italian landmark in Watamu

Founder of the Ascot Residence and Comites member

09-08-2024 by Freddie del Curatolo

Serious mourning among the Italians in Watamu. Carlo Barbin passed away the day after his 82nd birthday, after a long illness.
Barbin, from Lombardy, was a reference point for many fellow countrymen in the resort town, especially when Italians were not so numerous.
He had bet on the destination by buying the land and building what was to become the Ascot, a lovely residence with restaurant in the centre of Watamu, where the town's only casino was also later created.
Carlo was not only the soul of the community for many years, but also helpful to many, especially in his role as a member of Comites Kenya, when there was still no consular assistant.
His support for our campaign in 2008 against paedophilia during the 'Malindi protects children' initiative was important.
Barbin helped to flush out and send back to Italy a dangerous person. At Ascot, he created a happy island of holidaymakers and owners that continues today, with new management. My and Leni's condolences to his wife Carmen and daughter Raffaella are joined by the other members of Comites Kenya with President Bruno Giachino.
