Farewell to Loreto and its happy and beloved Kenya

The memory of an enthusiastic Malindi visitor

28-01-2024 by Freddie del Curatolo

An always respectful tourist, a lover of Kenya, an enthusiastic and curious traveller and a wonderful companion for his wife Eleonora.
One of the beautiful people I often met at my shows about Italians in Kenya with Sbringo or in the beautiful places in Malindi and its hinterland, which not everyone always visits.
An intelligent and never banal interlocutor with whom we exchanged messages from Italy to Africa, when the nostalgia for his 'second home' began to become overwhelming. I admired his frankness, his discretion but at the same time his ever-ready witticism, his desire to play down and also to look at the paradoxes of this country with the necessary lightness.

This, only in a small way, was Loreto Serapiglia, for us in Malindikenya and I believe for many Italian residents and holidaymakers in Malindi.
Loreto, who passed away suddenly at the age of seventy-two in the town he loved so much and frequented every year, leaving his Frosinone 'caput mundi' for a few months, as we once joked about it.
Sporty, companionable, a traveller, a lover of nature and good things: he enjoyed his brilliance to the full, even if for his vitality, curiosity and propensity for friendship, he should have lived to be at least a hundred years old, and infected us accordingly.

You leave us a great sorrow, but also the smile of your joy of life and of having understood Kenya with all its pros and cons, with intellectual honesty and willingness to share.
And the hope that many more Loretos may come to the shores of the Indian Ocean.
"My pillar collapsed. He loved Malindi and wanted to end his life here,' his beloved wife Eleonora told us.
To her and the whole family a big hug from Freddie and Leni.
