Italian tourist serious in Mombasa, hopes for medical repatriation

Young man from Verona allegedly had a swimming pool accident in Malindi

05-02-2024 by redazione

The Italian Embassy in Kenya has been following for several days the story of an Italian tourist from the province of Verona, who allegedly had an accident in the swimming pool during his holiday in Malindi and was transported to a hospital in Mombasa, where he had to be admitted to the intensive care unit.
According to unofficial reports, the conditions for the medical repatriation of the young Italian have not yet been met, but the authorities are monitoring the situation to create the conditions for this to happen.

We would like to remind you that according to the regulations published by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, a loan with a promise of repayment may be granted for medical repatriation in favour of passing compatriots in a state of temporary destitution, for their return to Italy on scheduled aeroplanes (using, if necessary, stretcher service and a medical escort on board).

The diplomatic-consular Representation must also acquire a medical certificate confirming that the Italian citizen is in a condition to undertake the journey (the so-called "air transportability of the patient").
In the case of Italian nationals suffering from illnesses that do not allow them to sign the promise of repatriation, if their relatives are unable to provide for repatriation, medical documentation of temporary incapacity must be acquired.
In the case of ill persons requiring hospitalisation in Italy, the diplomatic-consular Representation invites family members to identify a medical facility where the compatriot will be admitted once he has arrived in Italy. In the event of difficulty, the Head Office may ask the Prefecture to identify the medical facility.
