Lufthansa launched Frankfurt-Mombasa route

Two flights a week and connections from Italy

26-07-2021 by Leni Frau

A new scheduled flight arriving directly from Europe at Mombasa International Airport has been operating since yesterday. It is the flight of the German national airline Lufthansa, which uses the subsidiary Eurowings. As we had previously announced (read here), the flight will be bi-weekly, with departures from Europe on Saturdays and Thursdays and good connections also from Italy, obviously for now reserved only for residents and those moving for proven reasons of work, family or health.
The first flight left Saturday 24 July at 18.15 from Frankfurt and arrived at 5.10 in Mombasa, according to the timetable already announced by the company.
The next flights on Thursday 28 and Saturday 31 July can be booked on the Lufthansa website, and so are those to follow, with safe connections from Milan Malpensa and Rome Fiumicino with excellent schedules and not long waiting times but, checking the timetables, there will also be direct possibilities from Bologna, Turin, Florence, Venice and the others that usually have routes to the German city.
The opening of the German airline coincided with an increase in demand for the Kenyan coast and Zanzibar (the flight will also stop over on the Tanzanian island), after Germany lifted its tourism ban and left travellers discretion, advising against but not prohibiting. On their return from Kenya and Tanzania, in any case, travellers will have to observe a 10-day precautionary isolation period.
German Ambassador Annette Gunlher confirmed to the media that Lufthansa's move of the direct flight to Mombasa is not just about tourism but about improving economic relations between the two countries.
"It is another testimony of the excellent relations between Kenya and Germany," Gunther said, "German companies that come to Kenya do so with long term plans and I think this will not be a one-off, they have chosen to bring an airline to Mombasa and they will be happy to operate in Kenya at all levels.
The direct flight from Germany precedes by a few days the reintroduction of the Istanbul-Mombasa route by Turkish Airlines, scheduled for August, as you can read in this article.
