An old Italian adage, but also applicable to other nationalities (as is often the case, sayings and mottos are Italian because we are the first to coin them) says that those who are smart boast only if they get away with it. Otherwise he keeps silent and hopes not to have had any witnesses of what from audacity has become imprudence.
It must have also happened to the dozens of compatriots who have been stranded since the beginning of February, while trying to embark at Milan Malpensa airport for Kenya.
Oh, yes. For the first time it didn't happen only to those who had bought a ticket with airlines known for their inflexibility, such as Qatar and Emirates, but also with the more "permissive" Ethiopian Airlines.
The main point of contention was the registration on the portal www.globalhaven.org, which became mandatory before departure. This site, linked to the African digital control system Panabios, which seeks to limit episodes of corruption that are, unfortunately, frequent in all countries on the African continent, including Kenya, must be accessed in order to enter not only the QR code of the swab taken, but also the Green Pass certifying that two doses have been taken (two doses are sufficient to leave Italy and enter Kenya; no "reinforced" is required). Without this inclusion and the registration with the final approval, the airline is not required to board.
Many "no vax" who come and go from Kenya, for example, up to now have taken advantage of the lack of controls both in departure and arrival and, if at the counters of immigration in Nairobi and Mombasa someone had been fussy, clicked the tip and everything was fine.
We have never discussed the reasons and battles of those who do not want to vaccinate, but we much prefer those who defend their choice by fighting for their rights and giving up some privileges in order to be consistent with its principles and its dignity, rather than those who make themselves look good and at the first possible renunciation seeks subterfuge and shortcuts in order not to suffer the consequences.
For a few days now, as we have been informed by some travel agencies and airport authorities who periodically inform us (but obviously not by those directly concerned) the affaire has become more difficult. Everything is still quite smooth, at least as far as the softer airlines are concerned, for the many tourists who continue to ignore the national bans and manage to move to Kenya for a period of stay, armed with letters of invitation for work, volunteering and other clearly fictitious. Let's hope for them and for those who live on tourism, especially on the Kenyan coast, that this pantomime may end and that all the Italians who, despite themselves, respect the rules, however unfair they may seem to them, and do not boast of being smarter than others, will soon return.
