Parliament approves Gachagua's impeachment

The fate of the Vice-President in the hands of the Senate

09-10-2024 by redazione

The National Assembly of Kenya, yesterday, passed the motion of impeachment against Vice-President Rigathi Gachagua, accused notably of corruption in this unprecedented procedure, which comes after several months of open conflict between Gachagua himself and President William Ruto's closest allies.
The historic motion, the first of its kind for Kenyan democracy, was approved by 281 MPs out of 349 members of the National Assembly, i.e. more than the required two-thirds, according to the speaker of parliament, with only 44 votes against and one abstention.
The motion must now be submitted to the Senate, where 45 votes will be needed.
Supported by a team of about 20 lawyers, Gachagua spoke to MPs for almost two hours last night, basing his arguments on a 500-page document.
Among the 11 charges brought against Gachagua, besides corruption and abuse of office, were incitement to tribal hatred and affront to the Constitution of Kenya.
