Referendum, two days left to vote from Kenya

03-06-2025 by redazione

The repeal referendums on Sunday 8 and Monday 9 June are just around the corner and Italian residents in Kenya registered with AIRE or compatriots temporarily abroad for tourism, study or other reasons still have time to vote and deliver their ballots to the nearest consular office until 4 p.m. on Thursday 5 June. Residents who have not received their ballot papers at their Post Office Box, as indicated in their AIRE registration, should have had time to request that they be sent to another Kenyan post office box, just as those who reside in Kenya but are temporarily in Italy should have notified the municipality where they vote or where they were last registered on the electoral roll.

But are we really sure we know what we are going to vote on?

Let us recall in detail the five questions of the repeal referendum of June 8 and 9, 2025.

  1. Repeal of the contract with increasing protections – The first question asks to eliminate the provisions of the Jobs Act on unlawful dismissals, which currently limit reinstatement for employees hired after 2015 in companies with more than 15 employees.
  2. Dismissals in small businesses – The second question aims to remove the cap of six months' salary for compensation in cases of unjustified dismissal in companies with fewer than 16 employees, leaving the decision on compensation to the judge.
  3. Fixed-term contracts – The third question aims to reintroduce the obligation to justify contracts of less than 12 months, eliminating the current flexibility.
  4. Contract liability – The fourth question asks to extend the joint liability of contractors to accidents caused by specific risks of subcontractors.
  5. Italian citizenship – The fifth question proposes to reduce the period of legal residence required to apply for citizenship from 10 to 5 years, facilitating the integration of foreigners.
