What will happen in Amboseli Park?

President Ruto's announcement prompts discussion

23-08-2023 by Freddie del Curatolo

Called "the safari lounge," Amboseli National Park is famous not only for giving the view of Kilimanjaro from Kenya, but for housing almost all of the country's wildlife in a limited space of savannah, among small bodies of water that are home to flamingos and birds of a thousand species and are favorite pools for hippos and elephants. The park has always been cared for by the Kenya Wildlife Service, the government agency that is responsible for protecting animal life and the wildlife that surrounds it and comes under the Ministry of Tourism.
But now things may be changing at the behest of Kenya's president, William Ruto.

What's happening.
Ruto in a public meeting held yesterday to coincide with the official opening of the Maa Cultural Festival at Sekenani Gate in Maasai Mara, Narok County, instructed the Minister of Tourism, Peninah Malonza, to relinquish control of Amboseli National Park to the Kajiado County Government.
In a nutshell, from those who work (or would work) specifically to safeguard the park's ecosystem, to local politicians who are certainly on the ground but perhaps also have a more practical (to put it mildly) and less "scientific" outlook.
Perhaps tourism, as a source of revenue, could be the only trait d'union between the two entities.

In fact, according to the president, the transfer of power was suggested after Unesco recommendations and would be part of an order that never became executive, issued before 2013 by President Mwai Kibaki. ) and from an executive order issued earlier by former President Mwai Kibaki.
"It was the Maasai community that donated the land for the parks," Ruto later confirmed, referring to the decision as "something long overdue."
According to local politicians, the expansion of the Amboseli National Park area should lead to an increase in the wildlife population, consequently attracting more tourists and significantly increasing much-needed revenue for the country.

On the other hand, there is the increasingly prevalent human-animal conflict to be resolved, with felines attacking maasai herds and the latter retaliating by killing them.
Could this be the right solution, entrusting disputes and decisions to those whose job it is to work with the faces of local people and not elephants, lions and buffalo?
