SOLIDARITY

Over the years, the Karibuni volunteer organisation has earned the credibility and trust of the local population and authorities, and can rightly represent the Italy of solidarity in the coastal hinterland, thanks to its ability to work alongside the substratum of communities, sharing with them the most fundamental thing they aspire to have and maintain: land, health and education for their children.
Thus, after a crescendo of projects and cooperation in twenty years of activity, the organisation founded in Como, which now has affiliates throughout Italy and many friends in Malindi and Watamu, as well as dispensaries, schools and the model farms of Langobaya, after emergency initiatives water projects and ‘game changers’ (such as the market in the town of Langobaya), it inaugurated and donated to the community of Baolala a new fruit and vegetable market, which is located in a commercially strategic position, namely on the road to Tsavo in one of the busiest crossroads. Thanks to donations from Flora Como and GioKids, a large chain of franchised shops dedicated to selling toys and stationery, the new market is a reality in just a few months.
Women, the real driving force of Kenya's rural communities, will have their own space in a cosy and sheltered structure, to sell the products of their fields: a new and efficient market feeds a whole supply chain of work, from farmers' labour to transport, and raises awareness that “clean” work pays much more than the gimmicks and false myths of the modern age and unsustainable growth. Thanks to the market, more than 100 jobs will be created, which means on average being able to provide a livelihood for at least 400 people, considering the families that often subsist on the work of a single member in those areas.
Faced with a project like the one in Baolala, the local institutions also seem to have got the message, so much so that they have promised to pay special attention to Baolala and its strategic position for tourism, as a staging area for safari vehicles. Next to the market donated by Karibuni, other ‘facilities’ could be built for trade also linked to tourism and provide employment for young people.
‘We are proud that our projects are not only necessary, but are recognised by a community of more than 25 thousand people, between Langobaya and Baolala, as fundamental not only in the sphere of solidarity, but as a distinctive sign of what Italians are willing and able to do for the neediest segments of the population of the Kenyan coast in the sphere of cooperation. Just as Karibuni has been considered a partner in that area for years, it is a pleasure that the institutions also share our vision,’ said Karibuni Onlus President Gianfranco Ranieri.
