A monthly event for Italians in Nairobi, a small gathering held on a Thursday in the middle of the month, which is at the same time a literary review, a way to get to know some fellow countrymen who deserve it, their ideas and passions, and above all to get to know other Italians living in Kenya. “Incontritaliani” (Meet Italians) is the name of the events conceived and organized by Malindikenya.net, in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute in Nairobi, which will continue throughout the season, combining words with a pleasure that is all our own, that of good food and drink. For this reason, our collaboration has made use of two Italian businesses that are close to each other and complement each other within a pleasant and peaceful garden: Enoteca and La Dolce Vita at Muthaiga Mall. For each of the evenings, the formula is simple: from 6.30 p.m., aperitif in the Enoteca space, with wine tasting and appetizers, followed by a meeting with the guest of the day who will present a book in Italian or something else (Kes. 1500 including entertainment).
Finally, for those who wish to continue the Italian atmosphere of sharing, there is the option of dining in the adjacent La Dolce Vita restaurant, where the Italian chef will prepare a special tasting menu at a special price for the occasion (Kes. 2500, drinks not included).
The exhibition, curated by Freddie del Curatolo, will be presented on Thursday, September 18, by the Italian ambassador to Kenya, Roberto Natali, at the first meeting with writer Esmeralda Lovatelli, who will present her second book, “Io sono tutte loro” (I am all of them), a female-centered story that reflects on gender-based violence through a series of intertwined stories set in Italy and Kenya.
Joining the author, who has lived in Naivasha for many years, will be the deputy director of Italian Cooperation in Nairobi, Valeria Boninfante, whose office is one of the organizers of the annual “Activate Nairobi” event to raise awareness of gender-based violence.
Two more engaging meetings are planned for October and November: on October 23, it will be the turn of Luca Catalano, acclaimed author of the graphic novel “Lumumba, eroe africano” (Lumumba, African Hero), which is receiving rave reviews and full-page articles in Italian newspapers such as Repubblica, l'Avvenire, il Secolo XIX, and others.
Catalano has been living in Nairobi for a few months, after several years in Cameroon, Burundi, and Congo with international cooperatives. Freddie del Curatolo will be in conversation with him.
And it will be precisely the “factotum” of Italian culture, information, and memory in Kenya who will be the protagonist of the November meeting, on Thursday the 13th, with the presentation “in his own way,” between poetry and cabaret, of his latest book, “Ti immagini l'Africa” (Can You Imagine Africa), recently launched in Italy with a series of successful presentations and performances.
Other equally interesting events are already in preparation for December and January, and anyone interested in presenting their artistic and cultural side can write to info@malindikenya.net.
