AstraZeneca, an ironic love song from Kenya to the world

From their exile, an "instant song" of Freddie and Sbringo

22-03-2021 by Freddie del Curatolo

The Western world seen from voluntary exile in Kenya is not exactly like planet Earth seen from space, but sometimes the eight thousand kilometres distance is compounded by many other differences and philosophies that are almost antipodes.
Of course, globalisation and social media are doing their best to bring us closer together, the world of information plays its part, and in this "annus horribilis", affection for our friends and relatives and that never-quenched sense of patriotism have made us feel closer to our country of origin.
The Italian in Kenya who is integrated, who lives its Nature, who tries to make his relationship with the local population grow in harmony and intensity, without prejudices but not even excessive blinding enthusiasm, working on diversity and always taking the best part of everyone and offering his own, will always be an Italian: he thinks in Italian, speaks Italian, writes in Italian.
In my and Sbringo's case, he also composes and sings in Italian.
As you know by now, during this pandemic year we set to work to collect in a single music album the best of the songs composed since 2012 and performed in our shows in Malindi, Watamu, Nairobi and Italy until a few days before the lockdown.
But while rewriting, removing, adding, recording, arranging, playing (without the mo) and singing (with the ma...) "Once upon a time there were Italians in Kenya", which will be released next autumn, we also found the time to look at this troubled present. As is often the case when we discuss it, a song is more likely to emerge from our confrontation than a debate, a theorem, a resolution, an invective, let alone a complaint.
This is how 'Volo di stato' was born, the first 'instant song' about Italians stranded in the world who demanded a special return flight 'for free', and then the impromptu songs created for the series 'Le mie prigioni dorate'. Now, however, with the arrival of vaccines, chatting between the mixing of our songs, we thought of a love song, one full of hope and lightness, as was the custom in the eighties, when everyone was a bit 'dumb and happy (which is better than dumb and unhappy, to make a comparison ...). A love song in which a woman, the incarnation of falling in love, comes to save us from sadness and waiting, which, as philosophers teach us, is one of the worst evils because it rejects life as a path. And love in this case is not shot from Cupid's arrow, but from the syringe of a vaccine. Love contains all the components of life, but above all it has the great power to make us live the present in the best possible "mood": it exalts us, it deludes us, it makes us hope and dream, it throws us to the ground and launches us among the stars in a few minutes, it makes us immortal and pushes us to suicide, but in the end we understand that it is a necessary condition to confess, at the end of the journey, that we have lived!
So we decided that our superheroine of these times is called AstraZeneca: coming to save us, with many unknowns (but doesn't love have any?) but with the hope of returning to life.
Here is our musical journey, without forgetting that our favourite vehicle remains irony and in this case our motto becomes: "It will be a laugh that will vaccinate you".
GOOD LISTENING!
