Malindi Airport, all we can do is... smile

Projects, criticisms, hopes... and we'll sing our way through it, which is better

11-02-2025 by Freddie del Curatolo

In the never-ending story of the upgrading of Malindi international airport, each episode seems to reaffirm that there are many problems, but we must never lose hope.
For many, this also includes the hope that it can be done elsewhere in Kilifi County and not by expanding the current airport, which is now right next to the town. For heaven's sake, it wouldn't be the first nor even the last (we have many cases in Italy too), but between the eviction of accredited residents and squatters, that is illegal occupants, funds that have been allocated and no one knows what happened to them, projects that are not well defined, resistance from national airlines and neighbouring airports, really for now it's better not to think about it.
An important international logistics website reports: ‘The Kenyan government is looking to expand Malindi airport to attract direct international flights. Plans are underway to extend runway 17/35 to a length of 2,500 metres (8,202 feet), expand the apron to accommodate more aircraft, build a 7.5-kilometre (5-mile) perimeter fence and construct a car park that can accommodate 500 vehicles. The work has been delayed by individuals and groups demanding compensation for the land needed for the expansion. In January 2018, the National Land Commission of Kenya allocated 424 million Kenyan shillings (approximately 4.24 million dollars) to compensate 175 landowners for 25 hectares (62 acres) of land and pave the way for the expansion of the airport runway airport to allow larger planes and cargo flights to land in Malindi and boost tourism and business in general’.

Meanwhile, we can't really do any better (but we can't do any worse either...) so we'll just sing about it. Because life goes on and we have to have fun.
Enjoy the video! (Song in italian)
