INSTANT SONG

Malindi, the conscious beauty of the 'off-season'

He who lengthens the stay has a point

29-04-2024 by Freddie del Curatolo

'The sea in winter is a concept that no one ever considers,' sang the italian songwriter Enrico Ruggeri.
The equator has no winters, only a dry and a wet season, at least that is what they say and that is how it was when the child was a child and the climate was climate.
Today, if it is true that Kenya does not suffer the merciless fate of proverbs that go to hell in flooded rivers and dried-up lakes, so it does not fear that there are no longer 'half seasons' because it has always had only two seasons, there is still the harsh law of the tourist season, which has always been divided into 'high' and 'low', a bit like Bergamo. Maybe that is why it is full of 'pota people' in and around Malindi?
In any case, for some years now there have been more and more compatriots extending their stay on the shores of the Indian Ocean, despite the closure of charters, of a few restaurants, and of the places with sunbeds and umbrellas. The reasons? Basically, after an excellent and abundant season of tourists like this one, relaxation, the holy peace that dwells in the drips on the palm trees and in the rivulets by the roadside.
We are in a country where it is all too easy to realise that there are those who, especially during the rains (but what about when there is a drought?) are much, much worse off than us. Never complain in Africa, especially if it is to say that the humidity sticks to your skin, the mosquitoes increase and you cannot walk on the beach every day. The period from the end of April to the beginning of July, for those who frequent the Kenyan coast, can become an opportunity for many Italians to really get in tune with these places, and not just consider them the 'paradise of sun and sea', of the regurgitations of holiday worldliness even in winter, of schoolgirls and beach boys. The opportunity to live and feel 'out of season', and not just 'out'.

To complement these considerations, here is an 'instant song' (others would say, an improvisation) by Freddie and Sbringo on the subject, directly from the Olimpia Club in Malindi.
(Song is in italian)
