CORONAVIRUS

New cases especially on Victoria Lake region

Percentage slighly rises, 17 Covid-19 deceased

30-05-2021 by redazione

The percentage of covid-19 positives from swabs in Kenya has started to rise again and this is mainly due to the increase in cases in the Lake Victoria area.
Kisumu, Siaya, Busia, Homa Bay, Migori and Kisii Counties in total have recorded 70% of the total cases in the last 24 hours and this trend has been recorded for at least four days.
It all started with the discovery of 6 cases of 'Indian variant' in a factory in Kenya's third largest city, Kisumu, overlooking Lake Victoria.
The problem seems to be limited and the cases are not serious, although they are very contagious. In fact, in a short time, among the people who have come into contact with the 'zero patients' of the Asian strain, the positives revealed by the tests have become many.
Yesterday, the percentage on the strength of this recrudescence in the aforementioned regions, thanks also to the rain and the drop in temperatures, rose to 8.9%.
While Siaya and Busia Counties alone recorded 100 cases (while Kisumu dropped to 43), Nairobi stands at 54 and is still the County with the most positives. On the coast, only 21 cases were reported in Mombasa and 9 in Kilifi.
The Ministry of Health has also confirmed 17 new deaths, but this is a total of registrations over the last few days that brings the total count of confirmed deaths to 3,141.
There were 115 recoveries in the last 24 hours. 76 of them were under home care and 39 in hospital. The total number of those who have recovered is now 116,133.
There are 1,171 patients still in health facilities across the country, while 4,682 are in isolation and under home care. Of those in hospital, 104 are in intensive care, 21 of them on ventilator support, 58 on supplementary oxygen and 25 under observation. Another 90 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen, 84 of them in general wards and six in high-dependency units. As for vaccinations, 968,733 people have already received their first dose, including 293,240 people aged 58 and older, 165,409 health workers, 152,315 teachers and 82,007 security officers. Phase 2, the recall phase, is expected to start in the next few days. It will start with health workers. The 172,000 doses available will be enough, but in the meantime it will be important to receive other AstraZeneca-compatible vaccines to complete the cycle for all those who received the first vaccine.
