Now Covid-19 situation in Kenya is worse than in Italy

More hospitalized and deceased in the last 48 hours

If Covid-19 scares the nations with the most vaccinated people a little less (even if there are already those who, like British Prime Minister Johnson, are thinking of a third dose), Africa, struggling with the delta variant, which has now also arrived in China, is beginning to feel the fatigue of having to live with the virus for too long without vaccinating its population and seeing herd immunity as a mirage.
Since the beginning of August, the official figures speak for themselves: more people die in Kenya than in Italy, for example. If on Sunday 1 the difference was 15 to 5, in the last 24 hours the gap is to 24 against 23.
And as far as the African country is concerned, the official data are only a fraction compared to the situation that is starting to appear around, from people's testimonies, from blogs and from the situation of hospitals and mortuaries.
In Mombasa and some northern counties, dedicated hospital wards are starting to overflow and operators are always struggling with oxygen shortages.
Yesterday, the number of deaths reached the 4,000 mark (3,970 to be precise) while only 591 new infections were reported, compared to 4737 swabs carried out (12.5%).
With the seriousness of the situation on the increase, the number of registered swabs is worryingly low.
Meanwhile, 1,483 patients are still admitted to various health facilities in the country, while another 4,021 are being treated at home. One hundred and eighty-nine patients are in intensive care, 45 of them with ventilatory support and 93 with supplementary oxygen. Fifty-one patients are under observation.
Another 461 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen, of whom 419 are in the general wards and 42 in the High Dependency Unit.
Despite the arrival of another 400,000 doses of AstraZeneca and the announced arrival of the same number of Pfizer doses in the next few days, the vaccination campaign is proceeding slowly, with 38% of the total vaccinated (about 1,727,000) who have not yet received the second dose.
The percentage of vaccinated adults is 2.4% and if the process is not speeded up, it seems difficult to reach 10% of the entire adult population within three months, as recommended by the Government. The situation therefore remains in constant evolution and will be updated week after week, awaiting further donations of vaccines and collaboration from the African Union and the international Covax programme, which are pushing for Africa to try to align itself as much as possible with the states that are reaching the fateful quota of 60% of their citizens immunised.
