Pomodoro, the art and tradition of Italian food

A gem of homegrown flavors at Nairobi's Village Market

16-11-2022 by redazione

Popular legends narrate that the Italian tricolor was not only meant to recall the green of the plains, the white of the snow-capped peaks and the red of blood spilled in wars, but to symbolize basil, mozzarella and tomato, that is, the ingredients of pizza, the gastronomic symbol par excellence of our country.
Pomodoro is also the name chosen by Faustino Trufelli and Lorenza Piermattei, the owners of the pizzeria al taglio "alla romana," a delicatessen and catering business that since 1995 has been one of the landmarks of Italian taste in Nairobi, specifically in the Village Market Shopping Center, in the heart of the United Nations district.
Pomodoro is a small extraordinary mix between the popular art of Italian street food (not only pizza al taglio but supplì, focacce, panzerotti) and the more refined and homemade art of dishes such as lasagna in their various propositions, fresh homemade pasta and gnocchi with various sauces strictly of their own production, all also available to order. Dishes of the day or in season (try the fried calamari rings) and imported products go to enhance the freshness and flavor of the classic specialties that use, starting with homemade mozzarella, local raw materials whose production is carefully followed to respect Made In Italy.
"There has been almost maniacal research in the making of our products, according to what are obviously our standards, and only when we were satisfied with them did we offer them to the customer," Lorenza says. "Not only for Italian customers, who are many and now recognize us almost as an institution, but also Kenyans, having some presumption to teach them the taste and goodness of Italian products.
What's more, over the years, thanks to the cozy, simple and family environment, a special atmosphere has been created in Pomodoro that immediately refers to our country, making the original pizzeria by the slice transported directly from the "caput mundi" a place full of temptations and suggestions of our Peninsula.
