5 reasons not to reopen now Kenya

Today President Kenyatta decision

06-07-2020 by redazione

After expressing the 5 reasons why Kenya should reopen on July 7, 2020 (READ HERE THE PREVIOUS ARTICLE) here are the reasons identified by Malindikenya.net for the possible extension of the restrictive measures, lockdown and curfew.

5 REASONS NOT TO REOPEN KENYA NOW

- AVOID HEALTH COLLASSO: That Kenyan Healthcare was not prepared to manage a pandemic, especially seeing other more developed countries that should have been and have struggled a lot, was more than plausible. Closing in time, the Kenyan government in an intelligent and internationally appreciated way, tried to organize itself in the best possible way, with the help of donations and the World Health Organization. For a month now there has been a squeeze on the Counties, accused of not having done enough to guarantee beds in isolation, equipment and intensive care units to be ready for the peak of Sub-Saharan Africa, which the WHO expects by the end of August. Continuing with the restrictions would lead to the reopening with better situations to manage the period of descent of the virus, with presumably thousands of patients to be treated.

- ORGANIZING BEST COUNTRIES: While Nairobi, with the lockdown, has tried to limit the damage and has the possibility to perform hundreds of swabs every day (also for this reason the numbers of positive cases are always the highest), in the other counties, especially those in rural areas but also on the coast, Mombasa apart, the perception of Covid-19 is still low. Keeping it closed again would allow the individual Counties to improve their structures and activate control, prevention and awareness campaigns and solve the problems of malpractice that still cause so many deaths. Also in Kilifi County, for example, there are many young and well-trained doctors who need to be able to have adequate means, laboratories and assistants in order to be able to cope in the future not only with this pandemic and other possible emergencies, but also with complicated everyday situations.

- RESPONSIBILIZING CITIZENS: Almost every day, during the Covid-19 update press conferences, representatives of the Ministry of Health remind citizens that the battle against the virus is a "national battle" of which they should be the soldiers, not a problem to be solved. Keeping it closed a little longer should be an opportunity to call their citizens to apply all the rules to show the government that it is time to consider reopening. After having dealt with the emergency and set up the structures, it is time to focus on the population, since it is repeated every time in Kenya few people respect not so much the obligations as the rules of common sense, which cannot be controlled except with impromptu and random blitzes: wash your hands, keep your distance and wear masks.

- PROGRAMMING AFTER COVID-19 WITH CERTIFICITY: An immediate reopening, with an announcement a few hours after its application, according to many people could lead to chaos and a desire to party (as also happened among young people in Italy, for example) and consequent unrest and discomfort in the country. Repression and poverty could increase problems and cause unexpected damage. For this reason, the situation would be more manageable by announcing certain, but not immediate, dates for a gradual and painless reopening, but at the same time effective and protecting the various categories. For example, first daytime activities, then curfews two weeks later, first domestic flights and then international flights etc.

- USE DONATIONS TO HELP THE VULNERABLE: Kenya has received a lot of economic aid in recent months from the World Bank, the United States, United Europe, China and several other countries that have sent important contributions to deal with the Covid-19 crisis. Some of this money is aimed at helping the weaker groups, others at activating alternative health projects or equipping public hospitals. Thanks also to these donations, the Government has activated a food distribution program that certainly cannot satisfy all those who need it. Staying in lockdown a little longer could help to identify all citizens in need of help and care. Assuming very tight and careful controls to avoid dispersion and diversion of funds into the pockets of those who certainly do not have daily supply problems.
