MOURNING
24-06-2024 by Freddie del Curatolo
Another Italian historian in Kenya has left us.
Liana Tamburelli Gremmo was for many years the soul of beautiful African things on the coast. In the best Malindi, the family's Our Shop, which she looked after with passion and attention, antiquities not only from Kenya, masks and sculptures large and small, had their ideal home, right on the corner of the little exchange square. The same passion he had cultivated for safaris, living in contact with the wildest savannah in his family's Lualenyi reserve.
Our Shop was a boutique-museum always adorned with beautiful necklaces, vintage and new (which she designed herself), original and beautifully finished bags and other wonders.
It was impossible for anyone shopping in Malindi's Old Town, among tailors and artisans, not to stumble upon the most elegant and well-kept shop in the area. The Gremmo's shop was a small, inviting and suffused old world that gave those who visited it an 'old colonial' atmosphere and immersed them in an Africa that was becoming increasingly rare over the years, at least in the tourist town.
Liana was the hostess, lively and friendly, curious and fond of art and culture.
Even without the hassle of having to buy something, walking in and having a chat with her for so long was a pleasant habit that always filled my heart and made me learn something. With Liana goes another piece of that Italian Malindi that had understood and loved this corner of Africa for what it was and what it could give, giving it back to those who approached it with beauty and a natural predisposition to share art, culture and creativity.
To Sarah and Davide and Daniele, our deepest condolences.
