Floods in Kenya, deaths and displaced people rise

More days of drama and passion in the country: updates

03-05-2024 by Freddie del Curatolo

Almost two hundred dead and more than 90 missing. This is the dramatic death toll from floods and inundations in Kenya, which is unfortunately set to rise. In the capital Nairobi and in the counties of Kajiado, Nakuru, Mandera, Muranga and Homa Bay, in the central and northern regions of the country, bad weather continues to rage and many roads are blocked.
The pictures Kenyans post on social networks show entire neighbourhoods and villages completely submerged by water and in some cases attacked by mud. In the Mathare slum, streets and alleys have now turned into rivers, while the water has almost covered the tin shacks with people moving through the crumbling roofs and not wanting to leave the very little they have.
In the meantime, the rescue of tourists and employees of lodges and tented camps in the Maasai Mara by Narok County emergency forces assisted by the Red Cross has been completed, where there are now 19 structures flooded after the Talek River overflowed.

"No casualties have been reported and a tracing desk has been set up at the Masai Mara Sekenani Gate. 400 members of the National Youth Service (NYS) have been deployed to reinforce ongoing search and rescue operations in both Mai Mahiu and the Talek area,' reads part of the statement issued by the Kenyan Ministry of Interior. While human rights organisations warn Kenya will have to be prepared for such emergencies in the near future, and the government confirms that more than 150 army officers are engaged in search and rescue operations for the missing, especially in the Mai Mahiu area, near Naivasha, where an overflowing river engulfed an entire village with water and mud, leaving some 70 people dead, the United States and Great Britain have issued travel advisories for Kenya, urging their citizens to be cautious in case of extreme weather conditions. There is also concern on the coast, where the Galana and Tana rivers are reaching impressive volumes, due to water flooding into their beds from the north. The Red Cross has urged those living and working near the banks of the rivers to abandon their land and move to higher ground.
