Tourism in Kenya looks beyond the flood drama

Bookings don't stop, the weather will improve

07-05-2024 by redazione

The floods in Kenya in recent weeks and the ensuing tragedies, which are also the result of the country's unpreparedness for such events that, as several MPs and other national authorities have stated, 'are unprecedented in Kenya', do not stop the desire to visit the tourist destination from August onwards.
Bookings for the coastal regions are rising by the day and it is becoming more and more difficult to find cheap flight solutions, so many are turning to September and October, and even requests for Christmas and January are already flooding in.
As far as safaris are concerned, the great migration that usually attracts thousands of international tourists from June onwards, should not be compromised by the flooding of the Maasai Mara, resulting from the overflowing of the Talek river, which has caused the temporary closure of no fewer than 19 lodges and tented camps on the banks of the river. The wait for the epic transfer of the wildebeests from Kenya to Tanzania and back, with the presence of land predators and crocodiles to take advantage of it, could also be delayed due to the rains, which will provide vegetation and related nourishment. In the meantime, the weather and road situation should return to normal.

Finally, there is no problem with the consequences of the Tanzanian cyclone Hidaya, as written in recent days. The coast could be affected these days by strong winds, rain and storm surges, so sea-related activities, such as fishing and swimming, are not recommended.
Again, the tourism sector is ready to restart with optimistic forecasts, so much so that charter flights to Mombasa by the Neos company are 'scheduled' for the end of June, returning to reopening dates for hotels not seen since the pre-pandemic period.
Looking forward to a tourist season that is expected to grow, attention is now turning to how Kenya will deal with the humanitarian emergencies related to the damage and victims of the bad weather. In addition to the (official) deaths that will soon reach 250 and a hundred or so missing, more than 200,000 displaced persons will have to be reckoned with, and those who have no home or land of their own and do not know if they will ever find a roof for themselves and their families.
