Golf in Kenya, an attraction to focus on

Fantastic greens and good inducement for tourism

21-07-2023 by Freddie del Curatolo

By now golf is to be considered at all levels one of Kenya's attractions and not only for Western tourists, who have made the sport one of the growing pastimes of practitioners, but for Africans themselves.
The proof is that after Nairobi was included in the world PG Tour circuits, international tournaments are also flourishing in the other destinations where, without much effort given the wonderful Kenyan nature, "greens" and "fairways" are flourishing. In addition to the historic 18 holes at Muthaiga Club at the foot of Karura Forest in Nairobi and Nyali Golf Club, which opened in the 1980s and was a "practice and vacation" destination for great South African and American golfers at the turn of the last century, there is the incomparable Vipingo Ridge Golf, which in between "pars" also has an audience of herbivores (harmless ones, of course: gazelles, zebras and giraffes) and there is also Diani and Malindi, where another meeting was recently staged.
Each organizes competitions, and clubs find sponsors quite easily. Tournaments also attract the interest of hoteliers who see the inducement of the arrival of sportsmen as a good opportunity. Indeed, it is well known that golf, although more affordable today, is a passion for the well-to-do.
This weekend another Nairobi club, the Royal, founded in 1906, will host a leg of the NCBA Golf Series 2023.
Not an isolated case in East Africa, the stage was staged last week at Uganda Golf Club in Kampala, with more than 200 golfers in attendance in categories, men's, women's, and juniors.
The seventeen events will be held mostly in Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, and sportspeople from all over the continent are participating. It therefore seems important to include in the opportunities of the resorts, which are attentive to all types of clientele and not fossilized only on the Italian one and on the sea-safari combination, also the proposal for those who like to play holes, and not in the sense that some regulars of the Kenyan coast intend.
