The Kenyan meteorological service got it right. A few days ago, it warned that the so-called small rains were not over and that, on the contrary, there would be a resurgence of rainfall in Nairobi and the Rift Valley, and especially on the coast, where Cyclone Chenge was about to arrive from Madagascar, via Tanzania, Cyclone Chenge, not a category A cyclone but a fierce low-pressure vortex capable of unleashing bad weather, strong winds and storms on the coast, particularly from Diani to Kilifi, but also creating instability in Watamu and Malindi. In practice, a low-pressure area travelling across the Indian Ocean is said to be moving westward at 11 km/h about 500 km north of Madagascar with winds of 55 km/h and gusts of up to 75 km/h.
So, since yesterday, the capital has been hit by yet another storm (in reality, the alternation of rain and sunshine in Nairobi and its surroundings has never stopped since June) and bad weather has arrived on the coast, so much so that yesterday's plane crash in the Shimba Hills, in which 12 Hungarian and German tourists lost their lives, seems to be attributable to the bad weather conditions.
According to meteorologists, who at this point should be trusted, the bad weather will continue throughout the week, until we can say that the so-called small rains, which have now become much more than adults and capable of overshadowing their older sisters, have passed and finally brought us into the African summer. As for Chenge, in a statement released yesterday, Kenya Met said that the storm is fortunately continuing to weaken as it moves westward across the northern Mozambique Channel.
Despite its weakening, the meteorologist warned that its proximity to the coast could also affect weather conditions in some areas of Tanzania.
‘Heavy rainfall is expected in various parts of the country, with strong winds possibly exceeding 25 knots along the southern coast on Monday and Tuesday as the system dissipates,’ the statement read in part. Residents of the areas mentioned, including those engaged in marine activities, have been urged to be cautious, remain vigilant and take the necessary preparatory measures, Kenya Met said.
