The effects of the cyclone that has been battering southern Tanzania and its islands for the last two days will also reach Mombasa and the Kenyan coast in the next few days.
The cyclone called 'Jobo' battered the southern Tanzanian town of Mtwara, on the border with Mozambique, at a speed of over 200 km/h over the weekend.
East African meteorologists, however, have pointed out that as this rare tropical storm approaches the equator, it tends to lose strength and inevitably suffers the so-called 'coriolis effect' of centrifugal spin that scatters it.
In any case, the cyclone's disruption will cause thunderstorms and even extraordinary rainfall over Kenya's second largest city and counties to the south (Kwale, Diani) and north (Kilifi, Malindi).
The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has issued an alert to all Kenyan fishermen and boaters on the coast, warning them to beware of the impending arrival of Tropical Cyclone Jobo.
The authority said Jobo is expected to arrive on the Kenyan coast around midnight on Monday 26 April.
It could bring heavy rains and possible flooding, with between 200 and 400 millimetres of rain expected within 24 hours of its passage, according to reports sent out.
"The KMA asks all vessels operating in the coastal strip, private individuals and all those generally venturing into the Indian Ocean to refrain from any activity," the statement reads, "our emergency response teams have already been deployed and are ready to intervene, all other operations at sea have been suspended or scaled back.
Even at the port of Mombasa, the KPA authority has ordered exceptional measures, such as doubling the mooring lines, keeping ships close to shore and ensuring that the crew is on high alert.
This morning the storm is expected to hit the Zanzibar archipelago and Mafia Island, and during the day it will hit the metropolis of Dar Es Salaam. The vehemence with which it arrives will show how it will affect the weather on the Kenyan coast.
