Abundant rains, but no El Nino in Kenya

Meteorologists optimistic, says President Ruto

No 'El Niño', just normal small rains. This is what we have to expect for the coming weeks in Kenya, according to a public report by President William Ruto, citing information received directly from the Kenyan Meteorological Service. Meteorologists have confirmed that the rainfall will be heavy from late October to early December, but not as heavy as when it comes in correspondence with the well-known cyclone that is usually seen every seven years in the African Indian Ocean.
Ruto hailed the experts' news as a positive forecast. "It is even better for us because it will give us the opportunity to access our farms and produce more," the Kenyan president said.

After five years of below-average rainfall and a major drought that has undermined not only agriculture, but also the daily lives of at least ten million people, especially those living in the country's so-called semi-arid regions (22 out of 47 counties), this year's rains are a liberation that can bring hope that the poor people's minimum food needs, provided by the fruits of their own arable fields, maize and vegetables, can be met. As well as livestock farming, which has not only caused the death of thousands of cattle but has also caused feuds between communities in regions where access to water is a divisive issue and brings ancient disputes over land near water sources and rivers back to the fore.

The lives of wild animals have also been seriously endangered, with deaths of even protected species, including many elephants, migrating to unusual places and encroaching on land occupied by human activities.
These small rains, especially if they do not cause flooding and ecological disasters, damage to infrastructure and difficulties in accessing essential links and services, could be a boon for Kenya.
