They say it is increasingly difficult to fall in love in the world.
Not so much among human beings, who are naturally driven by desire, loneliness and other needs, as well as being able to listen to the beating of the heart and, at times, the less warm influence of reason. It is more difficult to allow oneself to be moved by a place, a novel situation, music, someone's words. Even in front of a breathtaking panorama, a silence surrounded by a fantastic backdrop, a work of art that brings with it centuries of history and society and at the same time the genius and talent of man, there is always the banality of the present contrasting with the absolute, of a mobile phone replacing the eyes, of a keyboard instead of words and an emoticon instead of an accomplice nod. These are the times of the selfie and the selfie, of the bombardment of information that has the same effect as cerebral desertification, of rampant inattention and the loss of the great gift of knowing how to listen and having the patience to learn.
C'èst la vie (un peu de mérd, they would add outside the Sorbonne...).
But can one still fall in love with a breath of new life?
Is there still room for the authentic emotions that a place like Kenya can give?
The list of those 'electrocuted' by Africa, and by this country in particular, is endless and obviously does not only concern Italians. The so-called 'Africa-sickness' is not something tangible and does not only have to do with classic falls in love. On the contrary, it is a combination of all possible fallings in love: there is within it the rhythm of life that goes in sync with the beating of the heart, the air of the equator that becomes breath more naturally than that of the western world, the sky so close that it leans against the gaze and not vice versa. It is difficult to explain and we have already done so several times, especially with one of the writings that most represent this site.
Today I realise that I have millions of photographs, especially without me as the protagonist, from the last decade, partly because of a wife who has a camera as a natural extension of her arm. But I have practically none from when I fell madly in love with Kenya. Of my first safari in Tsavo East, at the Galdessa camp on the bend of the Galana river, of diving in the coral reefs of Watamu, of sailing in a dhow in the Lamu archipelago, of the infinite wonder of the Maasai Mara, of a Malindi that smelled of flowers and smiles. I am sorry I don't have those images to flip through, but I bless every day the ability to be moved again by reviewing the film of my African life, closing my eyes and letting myself be carried away by the memories. Talk about a selfie!
To all the tourists and travellers who have arrived in Kenya this season or who are about to arrive, we wish that they will still fall in love or at least be able to experience one or more of the strong, vivid, saving emotions that the places and atmospheres of Kenya still know how to surprise, to the benefit of the induced and the predictable.
