Kenyatta extend curfew for more 30 days

No alcool to sell in restaurant and public places

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta spoke to televisions unified to the country, 21 days after the last briefing in which he had reopened the country from the county lockdown and announced the reopening to the world on August 1.
Today, after meeting with county governors, he announced further 30-day extensions and other measures, but without closing Nairobi and other counties as planned.
Here are the significant passages of his speech, pending the official communiqué.

"The last time we met, as many of our fellow citizens wanted, we reopened the country to reactivate the economy.
But I also did so by warning each of you and the community to respond positively to the restraining measures and to follow even more seriously the Covid-19 protocols.
Over the past three weeks we have assessed the response of the population and met in the morning with the county governors.
Infections continued throughout the country and spread to 44 of the 47 counties.
The aggressiveness of this virus that affects many of our older people is still present, we have many risk factors in the country starting with alcohol use.
Fortunately, the death rate is quite low, we are at 1.6% and this gives us hope that this pandemic will not pose a real death threat to us.
I want to remind the Kenyans what I said 21 days ago, the Government and the police cannot command the morality of its citizens, the people must regulate themselves and help themselves.
For example, if someone enters your shop without a mask, you must force them to do so, if you go to a restaurant and the waiter serves you without a mask or without following the rules, change restaurants and report those who do not play their part in this common battle.
We are not living normal terms, all over the world we are changing our habits and do not think that Kenya is special or immune, do not follow the negative examples you see in other countries that do not report their data. We are a country with a free press and we are transparent.
We don't want to get to situations in other countries where there aren't enough places not only in hospitals, but also in mortuaries and you leave the dead of Covid-19 on the street. We cannot risk arriving at these consequences.
For now we mourn 280 fellow citizens but we know that the number of deaths will increase.
We are at war with an invisible enemy and would like to bring catastrophe among us.
Protecting us is the only way and we can only do it together, helping each other.
There will still be some suffering to come, so each of us must be realistic and understand the situation. Let us look at ourselves and ask ourselves what our responsibility is, especially towards the people who are close to us and whom we love.
I want to believe that each one of us cares about relatives, friends, colleagues and neighbours as much as we do about ourselves and that no one wants to regret the other as others will regret you.
This must be the power of the community. So please put on the mask, keep your distance, wash your hands often. I say this as a person and I would like you to do it as individuals because you believe it, not because the government asks you to.
So all the measures I'm about to announce will have to be accepted by everyone.
21 days ago I said that I would not hesitate to close the country if there was a need, given the growing number. If we want to preserve our economy in the long term, we must act in this way.
Here are the measures:
Another 30 days' curfew starting at midnight today.
From midnight for 30 days no alcohol sales in restaurants and other places.
Restaurants for another 30 days can only open from 8am to 7pm.
Bars will remain closed and if they break the rules they will see their licenses removed forever.
The ban on assembly in public places, including weddings and funerals, continues.
