CORONAVIRUS

More positives in Kenya, but people seem not to care

Up to now no restrictions are expected

15-10-2020 by Freddie del Curatolo

Six hundred other cases, or rather 604. One of the highest numbers ever recorded in Kenya since the beginning of the pandemic. But what worries the Government is the percentage of positives per swab, which has gone back as high as 10% a few days ago.
All positive, in short, but also all healthy or at least very few serious cases.
There are more than nine out of ten asymptomatic patients and every day many patients are discharged from hospitals (yesterday 88), while even the death toll every 24 hours starts to be double-digit. Yesterday 10 people succumbed to the disease, bringing the total number of deaths to 797.
This is a portrait of a country with two faces: on the one hand, absolute scepticism and non-compliance with the rules, which for the most part are ignored by those who should control them, and on the other, the daily data from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that indicate a similar trend to other countries that have opted for the inevitable reopening of companies and meeting places to save what remains of the economy. According to projections made by the national medical research office KEMRI a few months ago, at least 2.5 million Kenyans had already contracted the virus, today according to those studies they could be twice as many.
The Ministry of Health continues to raise awareness among the citizens, promising to swab the population, which will inevitably increase the numbers, but the current figures do not seem to worry the people: the vulnerable groups, on the other hand, here are not mainly the elderly and sick, but the unaware poor and very poor who already live in conditions to expect death every other day.
The Crown certainly does not change their prospects, nor can they think that they have to defend the lives of their loved ones, let alone those who do not help them.
