A home defeat for Real Malindi, which to the bitterness of the result (0-1 against the Malindi Prison team that we had defeated with the same result in the first leg) contrasts the smile of a better present thanks to the Italians who have sent the first donations to the established CBO (Community Based Organisation) that allows the football academy that rescues boys from the streets of the deprived neighbourhoods of the town to run itself, together with the support of Karibuni ODV and Malindikenya.net and its readers.
On Saturday, we launched an appeal to usher in a new season for the team we created all those years ago with coach and educator Davis Badili and now managed by its first captain, recent graduate Joseph 'Maisha' Nyababwe.
And many small donations have already arrived!
Some have sent 1,000 shillings, which immediately provided a snack after training, others something more substantial with which to pay for the team's trips and give a smile (and more) to the little ones, who train together with their idols, the senior team, dreaming of being part of the team. Knowing full well that only by doing well at school will they be able to become Real Malindi footballers.
Because before any final result, there is the philosophy of the football academy we wanted: talent is nothing without study, a sense of responsibility and respect. It is the recipe for trying to give a better future to so many kids who risk being swallowed up by bad habits and the mirages of easy but ephemeral earnings, getting into shady circles and becoming slaves to alcohol and drugs.
